What Is Self Rising Flour

The next time you are in the grocery store, take a walk down the baking aisle. You will see many different types of flours, from all-purpose flour to bread flour to cake flour. Self rising flour is also sold in this aisle. It is a flour that already has salt and baking powdered added to it. In its mixed form, self rising flour has the baking powder and salt evenly distributed throughout the flour. When used in recipes, additional salt and baking powder are usually not listed.


When you buy cake mixes at the grocery store, you are buying self rising flour mixed with sweeteners and sometimes spices. The flour in cake mixes cannot be used as regular flour because it is a pre-mix.
Self rising flour is used for many different baked goods. It can be used for cakes, cupcakes, muffins, and quick breads. Biscuits and scones can also be made with self rising flour.

Making Self Rising Flour

If you can not find self rising flour in the grocery store or you do not have the time and energy to make yet another trip to the grocery store, here is a simple recipe to make self rising flour.
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1-1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
Sift the three ingredients together. Make as needed.
