The Writing of the Short Story
By Lewis Worthington Smith
This short book on writing short stories was originally written for the classroom. Students would learn the different structures of the short story, read a sample, and discuss what they have learned.
The writing style of this book is a bit stiff and wordy:
“This little volume is meant to be a discussion of but one of the various forms that literature takes, and it will be first in order to see what are the elements that go to the making of a narrative having literary quality.”
However, the book is educational and gives solid advice that is still in use today.
